5.25" Floppy Part 2: Floppy Hacking Tools
How to use low level tools to read a floppy diskette. Now that my vintage 5.25″ floppy drive is installed correctly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbxPW86B84E), I can read vintage 5.25″ PC floppies. Under DOS, low level tools allow to inspect partially damaged discs that Windows or DOS can’t read, or discs that are not formatted for the PC and can otherwise not be read at all. Omnidisk and DiskImage are two such tools. I try it on a partially damaged HP LIF diskette.
Sorry, there is quite heavy lecturing in this video, as I painfully try to explain 5.25″ disk drives types (SD, DD, QD and HD), track densities (48 and 96 tpi), rotation speeds (300 and 360 rpm), data rates (250k, 300k and 500k), encoding (FM and MFM), and sector formatting (sector numbering, bytes per sectors, and interleave factor). Which you need to understand to use the tools properly.
And in part 3, we will use our new floppy hacking knowledge to recreate a proper non-PC vintage game diskette (https://youtu.be/YfLJZU4zgEU).
The drive used here is a TEAC FD-55BR, double density.
