How to Read Effectively for Exams

I am often asked if I have any brain-based learning strategies that teach how to read effectively for exams. The answer is always yes. It is easy to read effectively for exams, if you know the single most important thing to look for while reading.

What is the single most important thing you need to learn while reading for exams? The answers to the questions. This may seem like an easy answer, but if you reflect, you will see this is not what most people do while studying.

Most people read to learn a subject. After all why would you take a course if not to learn the material? While this may seem like common sense, actually you are making a critical error by doing this. Let’s look a big deeper into this.

Suppose you only learn the answers to questions on an exam. If you know every answer to every question on an exam, then what grade would you get? That is easy. You would earn an A. Now think about this. Suppose you really apply yourself to learn all the details in a book. Suppose you really understand the material, but none of what you study appears on the exam. Now what grade would you get? You will get a F. You see it doesn’t matter how much you learn, if what you know doesn’t appear on an exam. But it gets even worst.

How many times have you taken an exam where most of the questions covered trivia. Things that were not truly relevant to understanding the subject you were learning? As I think back to all the courses I have taken in my life, most of the questions were trivial. It was rare to get a truly significant question. So how can you read more effectively for exams?

To read more effectively for exams, you need to look at old exams given by the same instructor. Examine the types of questions asked, and the kinds of information they are seeking. Then match the material in your text to this same type of material for the new exam. You will get higher grades, and it will take far less time to study. You are going to love this strategy.
